What does oxidizing do to a piece of jewelry? December 5, 2010

Sterling silver tarnishes or oxidizes over time–much to our dismay.  But what happens when you actually do it on purpose??   The image shows a piece dipped in a solution of liver of sulphur (not the most appetizing name–and the smell is what you’d expect with sulphur).  It turns almost black.  Then, I buff the piece with OOOO steel wool to burnish and highlight.  You can compare this one with a photo of  a similar necklace before it was oxidized on the left. **** For a closer look, click on the images.
