Adventures in jewelry making

Mini-whoot ! August 22, 2013

So a few weeks ago I wrote a ‘pity post’ about how some jewelry pieces

that had been accepted for publication were returned

because the magazine, Bead Trends, had folded up shop.

Well, here’s the silver lining story…

two pair of earrings were published in the current issue of Jewelry Stringing !

If you just got your copy in the mail or digitally, check out Pages 62 and 63.

Mine are #1 and #26.

Not one of the bigger project pages, but I am very pleased just the same.

The publisher recently returned the two pair of earrings,

a copy of the pages, the magazine, and a bracelet that had made the first cut

for an article called Raw Beauty, but not the final cut.

It started as a length of 1/4 inch copper tubing, put through the rolling mill numerous times.

Annealed and hit with a torch to create an iridescent patina.

Wire wrapped with three small chunks of raw amethyst.

Jewelry Stringing’s strength is that all their projects use components

that are readily available in stores or online jewelry supply sites.

This bracelet definitely did not qualify as an assembly type jewelry project.

One thing I’ve learned is to do more investigating

about what each different magazine is looking for,

especially in terms of their expectation/requirements.

Live and learn…that’s a good thing!

Congratulations on your earrings getting published. I’m so glad that they made it into a magazine!

  3. Congrats! That’s awesome! I’m hoping to work up the courage to send something to a magazine. 🙂

  4. Glad you are crossing things off that wish list, Lynda! I’m also pleased you brought up doing research into the niche the publication caters to… that can save a lot of time and frustration. I have run across much discussion online about this topic recently. Sometimes the communication with the editorial staff can be improved by doing your own “screening” and knowing which questions to ask. Congrats on getting your lovely designs in print!

  5. Oh Lynda, I’m so excited for you! Your earrings are just gorgeous and are well deserving of being published! As for the bracelet, I think it’s very cool and would be perfect in a magazine as well, but you’ll just have to find the right ‘fit’, like you said, for it. I think it’s rather challenging figuring out what the magazines want/don’t want – the minute you think you’ve got it figured out and have something they’d like, you see designs in their pages that are not anything like what they asked for or expressed interest in, so it’s anybody’s guess these days! But the key is to keep trying and just keep making jewelry that you love to create and it will happen again for you!

    Congratulations! Very happy for you.
